Kevin J. Dunleavy

Kevin J. Dunleavy prepares and prosecutes U.S. patent applications, files, prosecutes and manages international patent portfolios, counsels clients on a variety of international patent and licensing issues, works with European agents on European opposition proceedings, and prepares validity, infringement, and patentability opinions.

He holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rochester and a JD degree, with honors, from the George Washington University National Law Center and has more than 30 years of experience in intellectual property matters. Mr. Dunleavy also served a one-year judicial clerkship for Judge Daniel J. Davidson in the Commissioner’s Office of the Food and Drug Administration.

A member of the Pennsylvania and Virginia bars, he is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Mr. Dunleavy spent six years as an in-house counsel for Akzo Nobel N.V. in Arnhem, the Netherlands developing and managing a significant, international patent portfolio for the specialty chemicals division. During this time, Mr. Dunleavy also authored numerous opinions and handled opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office.

Mr. Dunleavy was also a partner in the firm of Knoble Yoshida & Dunleavy, LLC for more than 10 years and prior to that worked for the firms of Hunton & Williams and Larson & Taylor (now Stites & Harbison).

Mr. Dunleavy is also a former faculty member for the Patent Resources Group, for which he wrote a textbook entitled, “European Patent Practice Workshop” and taught a biannual course on European patent practice for several years.

Mr. Dunleavy is fluent in Dutch and reads French and German. Mr. Dunleavy has lectured on topics such as European patent practice, PCT practice, and other intellectual property issues and has written several articles on various patent-law topics.
